Preparing for Insurance

Article Written by Ben Nehls of Miller Insurance Group

Insurance

A few weeks before I was to marry my wife, her father called and notified me that the day we marry, she would be dropped off his insurance. As a recent college graduate, who was still riding his parents insurance, I was in a pickle! I had no clue what I was doing, and had to act quickly.

I was fortunate that things worked out, but I don’t want you to experience the same stress I did. Much of the stress could have been avoided if I would have known “what to do.” Below are some tips to make sure insurance doesn’t put you in a frenzy on your wedding day.

Start Early

As you prepare for your wedding, insurance is most likely the furthest thing from your mind. Being as it is required to drive, or receive a loan on a house, it is an important thing! Most insurance companies offer quotes that are good up to 60 days before their start date, so you can get working on it. A side benefit of tackling things early, you will probably impress your parents and in-laws!

Be Prepared

As you begin the insurance process, it’s a good idea to have all of your data ready! For both you and your spouse, you should have things ready like:

  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Vehicle Identification Numbers for cars
  • Social Security Number
  • Previous Insurance Carrier

| All of these things help to deliver you an accurate quote.

Do Your Homework

When leaving your parent’s policy, it’s natural to secure a quote from that agent. It’s also a good idea to seek out other proposals for your new situation. It’s important to evaluate companies on more than just price.

  • Does the agent discuss coverages with you?
  • What kind of extra benefits are present?
  • Is the agent trustworthy?
  • How are claims handled?
  • Are there multiple payment options?
  • Can I grow with this insurance company? (more cars, homes, kids)

It’s important to thoroughly evaluate your options before deciding on where to put your insurance. When it comes time for a claim do you want to be with the company with the cheapest price? Or the company with the best coverage?

These are just a few thing to get you started on your new insurance adventure. In the next post, we will start diving into a few important coverage details!
